Practical Japanese Communication Exam
Purpose of the Exam The test is designed to help non-native speakers of Japanese expand their employment opportunities and expand their ability to carry out work tasks using Japanese by assessing their level of understanding in such areas as business etiquette, ability to converse with superiors and work colleagues, customer service ability, and more.
Eligibility to sit the Exam As a general rule, only non-native speakers of Japanese may sit the exam. There are no restrictions on nationality, educational background, age, and the like.
Exam Fees Evaluation test 4,991 yen (tax included.) The evaluation level, which is documented as a level certification issued following the exam, can be entered on official documents such as employment resumes and similar.
Assessment test 2,139 yen (tax included.) The assessment test only gives feedback on performance. Since the evaluation level is not certified, a level certificate will not be issued.

・Able to predict what other people are expecting, in light of the circumstances, as well as the impact one’s actions may have on other people and how the resulting situation will develop, and thus being able to move toward the real purpose of communication.
・Able to understand from certain phrases the intended meaning and to respond correctly when remarks by another person contain some implicit intent that differs from the actual content of the words.
・Able to use expressions properly, depending on the situation.
・Has a profound knowledge of Japanese business etiquette and communication.
A- 81%~90%
B B+ 71%~80% ・The applicant is capable of more or less appropriate communication in Japan in somewhat limited circumstances.
・Able to move toward the real purpose of communication, while considering the circumstances.
・More-or-less able to understand the intended meaning and respond correctly when remarks by another person contain some implicit intent that differs from the actual content of the words.
・Proper use of the expression in accordance with the situation can be to some extent.
・Has a basic knowledge of Japanese business etiquette and communication.
(In the future, the applicant is expected to obtain more knowledge and experience and further improve these Japanese communication skills.)
B- 61%~70%
C C+ 51%~60% The applicant is capable of basic communication in Japan in limited circumstances. ・Capable of basic communication while considering the other person’s position.
・More-or-less able to understand the basic meaning when remarks by another person contain some implicit intent that differs from the actual content of the words, if not too complex.
・Able to use some expressions properly in accordance with the situation.
・Has a rudimentary knowledge of Japanese business etiquette and communication.
(In the future, the applicant is expected to obtain more knowledge and experience and further improve these Japanese communication skills.)
C- 41%~50%
D D+ 31%~40% When communicating in Japan, the applicant is prone to inappropriateness.
・Has trouble communicating while considering the other person’s position
・Has trouble understanding the intent when remarks by another person contain some implicit intent that differs from the actual content of the words.
・Has trouble using expressions properly in accordance with the situation.
・Has very little knowledge of Japanese business etiquette and communication.
(In the future, the applicant is expected to obtain more knowledge and experience and further improve these Japanese communication skills.)
D- 21%~30%
E E+ 11%~20% When communicating in Japan, the applicant is often inappropriate.
・Incapable of communicating while considering the other person’s position.
・Incapable of understanding the intent when remarks by another person contain some implicit intent that differs from the actual content of the words.
・Incapable of using expressions properly in accordance with the situation.
・Has very little knowledge of Japanese business etiquette and communication.

E- 0%~10%
