Practical Japanese Communication Exam Bridge
Purpose of the Exam The test aims to help expand access to higher education in Japanese by assessing the Japanese language understanding of those who are not native speakers of Japanese at levels N5 to N3 of the Japanese Language Proficiency Test (JLPT), which is the basic level required to attend university in Japan.
Eligibility to sit the Exam As a general rule, only non-native speakers of Japanese may sit the exam. There are no restrictions on nationality, educational background, age, and the like.
Exam Fees Evaluation test 4,991 yen (tax included.) The evaluation level, which is documented as a level certification issued following the exam, can be entered on official documents such as employment resumes and similar.
Assessment test 2,139 yen (tax included.) The assessment test only gives feedback on performance. Since the evaluation level is not certified, a level certificate will not be issued.

・Able to read and understand sentences written using basic vocabulary.
・For often-encountered people and everyday situations, is mostly able to communicate by speaking and listening conversationally.

Total Japanese study time 300 hours to 500 hours
B- 61%~70%
C Level
(equivalent to N5)
C+ 51%~60% Able to understand basic Japanese to a certain extent.

・Able to read and understand fixed expressions and common sentences written using basic vocabulary.
・For a limited range of people and everyday situations, is able to communicate if spoken to slowly.

Total Japanese study time 150 hours to 300 hours
C- 41%~50%
D Level
(equivalent to STEP N5)
D+ 31%~40% Able to understand a little basic Japanese.

・Able to struggle through reading and understanding fixed expressions and common sentences written using basic vocabulary.
・For a limited range of people and everyday situations, can manage to communicate if spoken to slowly.

Total Japanese study time 100 hours to 200 hours
D- 21%~30%
E E+ 11%~20% Doesn’t understand basic Japanese, and often lacks inappropriateness.

・Able to understand rudimentary phrases and short sentences written using hiragana or katakana script, but cannot understand the overall meaning of sentences.
・Cannot communicate in Japanese, even if capable of basic greetings in everyday situations.
E- 0%~10%

*The differences in total Japanese study time for these certification standards are due to the differences between students from regions where Chinese characters are used and students from other regions.
